Titanium is a very misunderstood material. Every now and again we get some interesting comments on our socials – usually fuelled by misinformation and myths. There has always been a lot of marketing about materials in the bike industry trying to persuade people in a certain direction. We thought this would be a great opportunity to dig down to facts and dispel some myths for the greater good. So let’s dig into this one about why Titanium handlebars were supposedly banned!

The fact that this person took the time out of their day, maybe 5-10 minutes, to write this comment and was adamant enough about it to reply, shows just how far misinformation can spread and transform over time. It also points to how pervasive marketing can be that it shapes our belief systems and dictates our actions. Titanium and other materials like carbon, have been marketed for a range of different commercial reasons that don’t always reflect the material’s actual properties.

Our goal with this post is not to humiliate this person, but rather to ask “Is that true? And if not, where did that idea come from?”

  ### Titanium bars are BANNED?

So let’s start with myth number one. This isn’t the first time this one has come up – we often get people confusing our Titanium MTB handlebars for motorcycle handlebars. Indeed the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) did outlaw the use of Titanium for racing in the 1970s but it wasn’t for reasons of safety as is commonly misstated. If you dig into this the reasons are mostly attributed to a crazy Swede who started whooping butts by a long margin at motocross events across the USA in the early 70s – on a Titanium frame!

Because the frame was so light, yet incredibly strong, it was considered an unfair advantage. The high cost of the material was considered a barrier to entry for racing so banning it was intended to keep the playing field level. This was probably the right decision – races should be won by skill and determination instead of how much cash could be injected.

Of course, the account is from Lars Larsson’s perspective in this article so it is probably a little biased. It is important to look beneath commonly held beliefs to find the facts and make up your own mind. So here are the exact words used by the AMA on their website in an article about the bike:

“Though legal when it was made, the frame was disallowed for the 1972 season by AMA officials, who feared titanium would escalate racing costs.”

### Is Titanium a safe material?

Most mentions about Titanium safety online come from forums which means they are most likely recycled beliefs only, well-informed or not. We can’t find any references to Titanium failures in early designs for motorcycles at all! This leads us to assume this is another myth that has become pervasive due to misinterpretation and repetition.

The article above doesn’t say what type of Titanium was used – nor any reference to critical Titanium failures. This is important because confusion over pure Titanium and Titanium alloy is also very common. The properties of pure Titanium are not so great for motorcycles or bicycles so we assume it was some sort of Titanium alloy. When mixed with other metals to further enhance the performance characteristics, Titanium alloy is considered a super alloy which is why various forms are used in the aerospace industry.

Manufacturing methods have advanced drastically so that the way we make components is in a completely different league from the 70s. Also, motorcycles and MTB present completely different forces and engineering challenges to each other. What a motorcycle needs is not what a mountain bike needs. In our opinion, Titanium is the best and safest material for use in mountain biking.

A misconception stemming from confusing pure Titanium and Titanium alloy. Certain Titanium alloys can be annealed but there is no reference about it being needed for Titanium handlebars.

### Tensile strength cannot be confirmed

Ummm… wut?

A quick search will show that Ti3Al2.5V tubing shows a tensile strength (yield) of 620 MPa. 

### They are often brittle

This one is patently untrue. Again this is a misconception due to not understanding the difference between pure Titanium and Titanium alloy. Pure Titanium can be brittle at cold temperatures which is one of the reasons why it isn’t used in the cycling industry – commonly just for implants that live inside the human body.

There are situations that can make Titanium alloy brittle, such as when the mix of oxygen is too high which is why welding has to be done in a very specific way. But our handlebars are not welded or 3D printed so it’s a non-issue.

  ## **The Spitfire: Roost Nero Ti Aggressive Hardtail Wrapped in Ohlins Yellow**

This is a super sexy build we did to pair raw Ti with a classic Ohlins fork colourway: Silver Titanium with Yellow and Black. We think she turned out incredibly!

Yellow is not the most popular colour on bikes. Pairing silver and yellow makes us think of the legendary Spitfire planes of WW2 (although they were mostly grey and green). We stayed true to the yellow accents as much as possible and it was just enough to make it pop. The slack angles of this frame make it look like a Spitfire about to take off.

The result is a super quiet bike apart from the buzzing hornet rear hub and the brraaap of the tyres on dirt!

“This bike was my first hardtail in a long time. Coming from long travel dualies and an XC full suspension bike, I only thought this would just be a good way to improve my skill and make me faster on the dual suspension bikes. I was so wrong. I blew all of my times out of the water on the gnarliest trails after only 3 rides. This bike changed the way I ride and forced me to be better – better lines, better cornering technique, better balance and body position. I also feel like the Ti flex takes the sting out of the hits and actually helps me power up the pinch climbs faster. My legs actually feel less tired after climbing on this. The Nero is now my favourite bike by far.

Every ride is unique. So is every rider and every bike for that matter!

Hardcore biking enthusiasts like those of you within our community are familiar with the pros and cons of various bike material. That’s why opinion in the biker community is often divided between titanium, aluminium and carbon bikes.

We’re firm believers that every biker is different. Regardless of experience, many of us have unique needs that can be met by different types of bikes. While each bike frame comes with its own set of advantages, which we will explore below, titanium is a firm favourite among our team!

Our favourite feature? They’re smashing on rock gardens and single-track paths.

For a deeper dive into the value titanium brings to the table (and the trails), here’s our take on one of the biggest debates in the biking community.

### **Carbon bike frames are popular—but they come at a cost**

Many riders talk to us about carbon bike frames. While they come with many of the features riders expect in professional equipment, there’re two major drawbacks: they’re often the most expensive models and damn you don’t want to drop it hard on a rock.

Despite the fact that prices may be dropping over time, this also means that the quality of carbon fibre is changing.

High-end models can be customised to meet unique needs in terms of comfort, stiffness or weight. Cheaper models can prove to be unsatisfactory in quality.

We’ve also seen that carbon fibre isn’t the most durable material. While scratches are inevitable, there’s also the threat of rapid crack propagation because its stiffness also means that it’s brittle. Just look at some crash reviews on the web.

The high cost and fragility of carbon fibre can also change your mindset and commitment when riding. We all know the telltale signs that we are holding back on fast descents, off-camber turns and big hucks – all becuase we don’t want to disconnect from the bike and have it slide down the hill damaging the precious frame all the way. We lack commitment on jumps, brake on drops and go all squid in the corners.

### **You can’t beat aluminium when it comes to cost—but there’s a catch**

While aluminium bike frames are considered to be better for stiff, entry-level bikes, this opinion may be changing in the community.

While we prefer titanium frames, we know plenty of seasoned riders who are happy with their aluminium bikes. They’re also preferred among riders who like to save a dollar.

That said, they’re still considered to be better suited for riders who are just entering the scene. This may also be because they’re generally one of the cheapest options on the market. But just look at those ugly welds.

Stiffness in frames has traditionally been desirable – but that’s changing as well. Carbon is great for building in vertical compliance to improve ride comfort while maintaining torsional stiffness so that pedal power is transferred to the wheels. Aluminium is just stiff all over so the rough ride quality can really wear you out.

### **Titanium addresses the drawbacks of almost every other model**

Even among experienced riders, there’s a perception that titanium is heavier compared to other metals. The truth is that modern designs (like the Roost Nero Ti Aggressive MTB Frame, if we do say so ourselves) are lightweight.

Titanium bikes are also great if you want to branch beyond just rocky mountain trails. At Roost Bike, we’ve achieved this by equipping our MTB frame with:

Titanium also has a bow-like quality that transfers power from the pedals to the wheels like a tightly wound spring. As you put the watts down the frame can slightly flex and release that power instead of absorbing it. This results in less pedal fatigue and feedback on the pedals from an overly stiff frame.

In addition, the strength and damage resistance of titanium will mean you just never have to worry about crash damage. The result is more commitment in your riding, faster times and way more fulfillment from your rides.

## **Let’s talk wheels**

Upgrading your wheels can have a big impact on the way your bike rides.

Buying a new pair of mountain bike wheels is a sizeable investment, but choose wisely and it can actually be the most transformative upgrade to your riding experience that you can make.

On the surface, wheels simply roll and support tyres that cushion the bike from the terrain.

Dig deeper though, and different products all transfer power variably, accelerate at a range of rates and conform to bumps uniquely. Freehub and hub designs impact durability, serviceability and rolling resistance, while every rim responds differently to impacts. There’s a lot to take in.

Carbon-fibre rims are often thought of as the ultimate wheel upgrade, but high-end extruded aluminium rims can be just as light and offer an even more forgiving ride – in fact many top enduro racers still bank on alloy rims instead of carbon.

Both materials have advantages, but the general consensus is that carbon ‘should’ produce a tougher and rounder wheel, although the flipside of this is that they can fail catastrophically, while an alloy rim may be temporarily repairable – enough to get you home. Our experience is that modern carbon rims rarely break, while alloy rims can ding or dent relatively easily which can cause tubeless tyres to leak air and lose their seal.

Overall, it’s hard to draw general conclusions about either material – as ever, it comes down to the design and construction of specific products.

If you’re going to the trouble and expense of upgrading though, your new hoops better improve performance or what’s the point, right? The after-market wheel sets should noticeably improve rolling speed, handling, and acceleration over cheaper, stock wheels, and if you shop wisely you can have the best of both worlds, balancing fast and zingy against strength and comfort.

The popularity of longer-travel enduro bikes and faster and more technical tracks means wheels get abused more than ever. This partly explains the sector’s bias towards strength and toughness over weight saving and maximum efficiency. Weight is still a crucial factor, however, in terms of rolling speed, acceleration and less rotating mass to drag uphill and we’re frequently surprised by wheel tests downplaying this aspect.

Nowadays there is a plethora of great wheels to choose from; the set that best suits your needs will depend on the compromise between cost and performance that matters most for your riding style and terrain.

## **Weight**

Lighter wheels accelerate and slow down faster, change direction quicker and make climbing easier. It’s not always that simple though, as wheel roundness and stiffness are factors too, plus the physics involved with rotating mass and centrifugal forces means weight closer to the outside edge makes more difference, so a heavier wheel with a proportionally lighter rim can still spin up to speed faster.

## **Spoke count and design**

Extra spokes add strength, but also weight, and can reduce comfort in terms of bump swallowing. They can also improve resistance to twisting or lateral flex, increase overall strength and durability and should ensure a wheel stays tighter and truer longer too. Any spokes chosen have to match budget constraints and can use different gauges, buttings (thicker and thinner zones to save weight) and profiles to tune ride quality. Proprietary spokes are often harder to replace and source.

## **Rim width**

Most modern rims have become wider. The extra room inside allows the sidewalls of broader, grippier and more comfortable tyres to sit naturally and inflate as manufacturers intended. Rim material, shape and depth also have a marked influence on impact strength, stiffness and compliance. Plenty new tubeless rims forego a bead hook to save weight and boost sidewall resilience, and it’s now accepted [tubeless](https://www.mbr.co.uk/how-to-2/how-to-tubeless-351341) [tyres](https://www.mbr.co.uk/news/product_news/best-mountain-bike-tyres-323130) mount, stay inflated and remain stable with a multitude of quirky rim profiles.

## **Bearings and sealing**

How smoothly (and ultimately how fast) wheels spin is closely linked to bearing quality and design. Riders that live in wet areas where grit and crud can get inside hubs and eat into a precious investment are looking for good seal protection. Balls and bearing casing specification, rubber seals, and grease all effect lifespan, but better sealing can also add friction, which reduces rolling speed. Beware special bearing sizes and fiddly designs that are a faff to service too. Cup and cone (open) bearings are still common in Shimano hubs and spin well, but require more looking after.

## **Engagement or pick up**

Most hub designs use a pawl system of some description whereby small metal ‘hooks’ engage into a ratchet to drive the hub, then disengage to allow the hub to freewheel. Different designs have their own levels of drag (resistance to spinning freely) while not pedalling and engagement (measured in degrees of rotation). A faster pick up means power is delivered quicker; especially useful for technical climbing where lower gears and higher torques mean responsiveness is key. Faster engagement can eat into durability and strength, since splines or ratchet teeth first need to be smaller to be closer enough together to enable it.

## Why Titanium Handlebars?

Titanium is a wonderful material for a handlebar. A bit more weight than carbon but for a small weight increase you get an unparralled ride feel, strength and the Roost Ti bars look incredible.

### Transform Your Ride Feel

The upshot of the Roost Bike Titanium handlebar is that they ride a little more comfortably than the aluminum or carbon bar’s, especially on bigger hits, where they take the sting off. They work incredibly well to reduce vibration that gets transferred up your arms when riding at high speed and over long distances. The result is less arm pump and hand fatigue among other things. It’s a great compromise, they’re comfortable, but not so flexible that they give a vague steering feel or unpredictable handling.

### Better Long Term Value

There is no denying that these bars are on the upper end of the price range, but if you google the big names the Roost bars are very well priced. So why would anyone want titanium? Well, it looks cool for one–there’s just something about that corrosion-resistant grey metal some of us love. Longevity and durability are less vain reasons to choose titanium. Of the three materials, carbon is the most susceptible to damage in a crash, and aluminum has the shortest fatigue life. Titanium has a longer fatigue life than aluminum and is less vulnerable in a crash than carbon. Most manufacturers recommend replacing handlebars every one to three years to prevent fatigue failure. Roost bike recommends every seven years for the titanium bar’s! In other words, in the long run, the titanium bar costs less and is just so much more sexy than the others.

This bar will look good and ride well on your bike for years. Roost bars come in 31.8mm dia x 780mm wide with a 30mm rise, 20mm rise and a flat bar option.

Most of us know what it feels like to be out on the trails. The adrenaline, the community, the satisfying sound of your wheels, the air rushing past you, and so on. We could go on, but that seems sufficient for now.

We love most parts of the biking process. There’s one part, however, that tends to be a hit or a miss with our community. And that’s the journey to the trails. The process of loading your bike in the back of your vehicle and driving off shouldn’t be that painful, but it is.

Especially when it comes to choosing the best method of transportation.

There’s one especially divisive accessory on the mountain bike market that is built to support this process. You probably know what it is already, either from the title of this post or with the flashbacks you have of scratched paint and dented bike frames. It is the infamous tailgate pads.

   ## Why compliance is better

A lot of component design in mountain biking comes from road-bike logic, where stiffness means every watt goes into forward motion rather than getting lost to flex. That logic doesn’t always make sense on the trail, where the surface is never smooth, and wheels leave the ground.

Stiffness has its benefits in certain places, but when it comes to those contact points you have with your bike, it just transmits those hits straight into your hands, wrists and shoulders, forcing you to grip even harder. Rise and backsweep are personal, but here’s some general advice to help you choose the right bar for your bike and style of riding.

  ## Common questions from riders.

Why not just get thicker grips?

Any extra cushioning you can get is a good idea, so long as it doesn’t compromise your control. Thicker grips only go so far – they only add about 2-3mm of extra compression over regular grips vs the extra 20-40mm of compliance you will get with a Titanium handlebar.

Isn't this what the suspension forks are for?

A big no. The job of the suspension fork is to keep your wheel on the ground for maximum control and traction. Setting up a fork for comfort will end up in frequent bottoming out and tears. Handlebars are the direct control part between you and your bike and are subject to all sorts of direct and lateral forces that aren’t absorbed by a fork. Adding compliance will help increase control and reduce the toll of impacts on your body rather than your bike.

Will this fit my bike?

In most cases yes. Check the clamp diameter on your stem. It will either be 35mm or 31.8mm – our bars fit 31.8mm only.

Why don't you offer a 35mm clamp version?

A 35mm clamp section will make the handlebar stiffer, which contravenes the whole purpose of choosing a compliant handlebar. We know 31.8mm to be a better standard for compliance.

Is this suitable for downhill or bike park riding?

These bars are designed and tested for bikepacking, cross-country and trail riding (EFBE Category 3). They’re not intended for downhill, bike park, freeride or big jump use. We’re actively developing models for those categories.

Will it scratch or mark over time?

Titanium picks up scuffs like anything else, but unlike paint or carbon, you can restore the brushed finish in seconds with a few passes with a Scotch-Brite pad and it looks factory-fresh again.

How long will it actually last?

Every Roost Ti handlebar is tested to ISO4210-5:2023, which involves 100,000 fatigue cycles at 450N up and down plus 270N torsional load. In real-world terms, riders routinely run these bars for 10+ years. If you ever do exceed the limits, titanium bends rather than failing without warning.

  IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

All Roost Bike products must be installed by a qualified bicycle mechanic in accordance with these instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and installation instructions in this document can result in product failure, which may cause serious injury or death. Mountain biking is an inherently risky activity. The rider is responsible for assessing whether riding conditions and terrain are within the intended use parameters of each product.

  ## General Requirements: All Products

- These products must be fitted by a qualified bicycle mechanic in accordance with manufacturer specifications
- **Do not use this product following a crash, impact, or if the product is damaged, scratched, dented, or marked in any way.** A product that has been involved in a crash should be replaced, even if no damage is visible. Contact admin@roostbike.com for guidance
- Inspect the product before every ride for signs of wear, fatigue, cracking, deformation, or loosening
- Do not modify, machine, drill, or alter any Roost Bike product unless expressly instructed to do so in product-specific documentation
- Always use a calibrated torque wrench when tightening bolts. Do not exceed the specified torque values
- Use only assembly compounds or preparations recommended for the material type (see product-specific sections below)
- Ensure all mating surfaces are clean, free of debris, and free of sharp edges or burrs before installation
- Please retain all packaging and documentation for future reference
- If you have any doubt about the condition or installation of a product, do not ride. Contact Roost Bike or consult a qualified mechanic

  CAUTION

Continued use of a damaged, worn, or improperly installed product may result in sudden and complete failure. Roost Bike products are mechanical components subject to wear, fatigue, and stress. No product is indestructible. Regular inspection and timely replacement are essential.

  ## Intended Use

All Roost Bike frames and components are designed and tested to the following use category. Use outside of these conditions is beyond the design parameters of the product, is not covered under warranty, and may void any claim against Roost Bike to the extent permitted by applicable law.

  ### Design Standard:

  ## Handlebars

### Installation

- Ensure the stem clamp bore is clean, smooth, and free of sharp edges or burrs where it contacts the handlebar
- Apply a thin layer of appropriate assembly compound to the handlebar clamping area before fitting. For titanium handlebars, use an anti-seize compound (e.g., copper or titanium-specific anti-seize). Do not use carbon assembly paste on titanium
- Centre the handlebar in the stem clamp. The centre marking on the handlebar must be aligned within the stem clamp area
- Tighten stem clamp bolts evenly and incrementally in a cross pattern. Do not fully tighten one bolt before moving to the next
- Ensure even clamping gap — the gap between the stem faceplate and stem body should be approximately equal on both sides
- Do not use handlebar extensions, bar ends, or accessories that apply leverage beyond the designed clamping points

### Width Reduction

- Width reduction must be carried out by a qualified mechanic
- Cut evenly from each side to maintain handlebar symmetry
- Remove all sharp edges and burrs from the cut ends
- Do not reduce width beyond the minimum width indicated in product-specific documentation
- Re-install bar-end plugs after cutting. Riding without bar-end plugs is a safety hazard

### Torque Specifications

  ## Stems

### Installation

- Clean the steerer tube and stem bore before installation
- Apply appropriate anti-seize compound to the steerer tube clamping area for titanium stems. Copper or Ti prep paste is recommended for titamium to titanium surfaces
- Apply appropriate anti-seize compound to the stem faceplate and steerer bolt threads. Copper or Ti prep paste is recommended
- For carbon steerer tubes, use carbon-specific assembly paste on the steerer interface to prevent slippage and reduce the required clamping force
- Ensure the stem is positioned at the correct height on the steerer tube. The steerer tube must extend sufficiently into the stem bore — refer to the minimum insertion marking on the steerer tube
- Tighten steerer clamp bolts evenly and incrementally. Do not fully tighten one bolt fully before the other
- Confirm the stem is aligned with the front wheel before final tightening
- Check headset preload adjustment before tightening steerer clamp bolts — the stem clamp should be tightened after headset bearing preload is correctly set
- Our stems have are designed to have the faceplate tightened flush at the top with a small gap at the bottom. Make sure to tighten the top bolts first (hand tighten only), then tighten the bottom bolts. After all bolts are hand tight, proceed to tighten the top bolts to torque spec followed by the bottom bolts.

  ## Rims

### Installation and Setup

- Wheel building and truing should be performed by a qualified wheel builder or mechanic
- Use the correct spoke count, spoke type, and lacing pattern as specified for the rim
- Ensure uniform spoke tension across the wheel. Uneven tension can lead to premature spoke or rim failure
- Install rim tape that fully covers all spoke holes before fitting a tubeless tyre setup. Ensure the tape is rated for tubeless use and is seated without wrinkles or gaps
- Use only tubeless-compatible tyres and sealant. Follow tyre manufacturer guidelines for inflation pressure
- Do not exceed the maximum tyre pressure specified for the rim

### Inspection and Maintenance

- Inspect rims regularly for cracks, dents, flat spots, or sidewall wear — particularly after impacts with rocks, roots, or other obstacles
- Check spoke tension periodically and re-tension as needed
- A rim that has sustained a significant impact should be inspected by a qualified mechanic before further use, even if no damage is visible
- Replace the rim immediately if any cracks, deformation, or structural damage is detected

### Installation

- Ensure the disc rotor is correctly mounted to the hub using the appropriate interface (6-bolt or Centre Lock) and torqued to specification

- Hub bearings should be inspected periodically for play, roughness, or contamination
- Freehub engagement mechanism should be serviced every 6 months, or every 3 months in wet or muddy conditions
- Do not use a high-pressure washer directed at hub bearings or seals
- Apply appropriate lubricant to the freehub body and engagement mechanism during service

  ## Pedals

### Installation

- Pedals are side-specific — the right (drive-side) pedal has a standard right-hand thread; the left (non-drive-side) pedal has a left-hand (reverse) thread
- Apply anti-seize compound to the pedal thread before installation to prevent seizing, particularly with titanium crank arms
- Thread pedals in by hand first to avoid cross-threading. If resistance is felt, stop and check alignment before continuing
- Tighten pedals securely using a pedal wrench or hex key to the specified torque
- Check pedal tightness periodically — pedals can loosen during use, particularly in the first rides after installation

###  Maintenance

- Inspect pedal bodies, spindles, and platform pins regularly for wear or damage
- Replace bent or worn platform pins promptly — missing or worn pins reduce grip and increase the risk of foot slippage
- Service pedal bearings at 6-12 months, or every 3-6 months in wet and muddy conditions

  ## Frames

### Pre-Build Inspection

- Inspect the frame thoroughly before building — check all welds, surfaces, and interfaces for any marks, cracks, dents, or irregularities
- Confirm that the headtube, bottom bracket shell, and all pivot/axle interfaces are clean, properly faced, and chased (threaded interfaces) before fitting components
- Verify frame sizing and compatibility with all intended components (headset standard, bottom bracket standard, axle spacing, seatpost diameter, etc.) before commencing the build

###  Assembly

- Frame assembly should be performed by a qualified mechanic
- Apply anti-seize compound to all threaded interfaces (bottom bracket, headset cups, thru-axle threads, brake mount bolts, derailleur hanger bolt) to prevent galvanic corrosion and seizing — particularly important with titanium
- Apply anti-seize or an appropriate friction compound to the seatpost before insertion. For titanium seatpost in titanium frame, use titanium-specific anti-seize
- Observe the minimum seatpost insertion from the seatpost manufacturer. The seatpost must be inserted to at least this depth at all times
- Ensure the derailleur hanger is correctly installed and aligned before fitting the rear derailleur
- Route all cables and hoses in accordance with the frame’s intended routing path. Avoid kinks, sharp bends, or contact with moving parts

### Ongoing Inspection

- Inspect the frame regularly for cracks, dents, paint lifting near welds, or any deformation — particularly after crashes or heavy impacts
- Check all bolted interfaces periodically for correct torque — bolts can loosen through vibration and use
- For full-suspension frames, inspect pivot bearings, hardware, and linkage for play, wear, or contamination at regular intervals
- A frame that has been involved in a crash or significant impact must be thoroughly inspected before further use. If in doubt, contact Roost Bike
- **Do not continue to ride a frame that shows any signs of cracking, deformation, or structural damage. Replace immediately.**

- **Stop riding immediately.** Do not continue to use any Roost Bike product that has been involved in a crash or significant impact
- Inspect all components thoroughly for visible damage including cracks, dents, scratches, bends, or deformation
- Be aware that structural damage may not be visible. Internal material fatigue, micro-cracking, or deformation can occur without obvious external signs
- Have the product inspected by a qualified mechanic before returning to use

  WARNING

A product that has sustained impact damage may fail suddenly and without warning during subsequent use. This applies even if no damage is visible. Roost Bike’s warranty does not cover damage resulting from crashes, impacts, or continued use of a damaged product.

  ## Product Life and Retirement

- All bicycle components have a finite service life, regardless of material or construction quality
- Factors, including riding frequency, riding conditions, rider weight, maintenance, and exposure to the elements, all affect the useful life of a product
- Products should be inspected more frequently as they age and accumulate use
- If a product shows any signs of fatigue, wear beyond normal limits, or reduced performance, it should be retired and replaced
- When in doubt about the continued serviceability of any product, contact Roost Bike or consult a qualified mechanic

Titanium is a wonderful material for a handlebar. A bit more weight than carbon but for a little weight you get an unparralled ride, strength and the Roost Ti bars scream baller.

The upshot of a Titanium handle bar is that they ride a little more comfortably than the aluminum or carbon bar’s, especially on bigger hits, where they take the sting off. It’s a great compromise, they’re comfortable, but not so flexible that they give a vague steering feel or unpredictable handling.

There is no denying that these bars are on the upper end of the price range. So why would anyone want titanium? Well, it looks cool for one–there’s just something about that corrosion-resistant grey metal some of us love. Longevity and durability are less vain reasons to choose titanium. Of the three materials, carbon is the most susceptible to damage in a crash, and aluminum has the shortest fatigue life. Titanium has a longer fatigue life than aluminum and is less vulnerable in a crash than carbon. Most manufacturers recommend replacing handlebars every one to three years to prevent fatigue failure. Roost bike recommends every seven years for the titanium bar’s! In other words, in the long run, the titanium bar costs less and is just so much more sexy than the others.

This bar will look good and ride well on your bike for years. Roost bars come in 31.8mm dia with lengths from 580mm up to 780mm. Roost Titanium bar’s are the very best bar you can buy for a MTB.

We take all warranty claims seriously and aim to assess them promptly and work with you to reach an outcome as quickly as possible.

This warranty outlines what is covered, how claims are assessed, and the intended use conditions required for coverage.

## **Governing Law and Jurisdiction**

This warranty is governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Victoria, Australia. Subject to any applicable consumer law rights, any disputes arising under or in connection with this warranty shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Victoria, Australia.

Nothing in this warranty excludes, restricts, or modifies any right or remedy, or any guarantee, warranty, or other term or condition implied or imposed by any applicable consumer law which cannot lawfully be excluded or limited. This includes the Australian Consumer Law and, where applicable, consumer protection laws in the customer’s jurisdiction.

For customers in the United States: Some states do not allow limitations on implied warranties or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages. In such states, the limitations set out in this warranty apply only to the extent permitted by the laws of that state.

## **Consumer Guarantees (Australia)**

## **What is Not Covered**

This warranty does not cover:

- Damage resulting from crashes, impacts, or accidents
- Damage caused by use outside the intended use riding conditions
- Damage resulting from excessive loads or forces beyond intended use
- Normal wear and tear
- Improper installation or assembly
- Improper maintenance
- Modifications or alterations to the product
- Use of incompatible components

Damage resulting from external forces such as impact, overload, or crash conditions is not considered a manufacturing defect.

## **Assessment of Claims**

All warranty claims require inspection of the product.

The customer must notify Roost Bike within 30 days of discovering any issue. The customer must cease using the product immediately upon discovering any defect, damage, or anomaly that may affect the safety or structural integrity of the product. Continued use after discovery of any issue may void the warranty claim.

Assessment is based on the physical condition of the product and may include evaluation of:

- deformation
- impact damage
- wear patterns
- fracture characteristics

This allows us to determine whether a failure is due to a manufacturing defect or external factors such as load or impact.

The condition of the product at the time of inspection may affect the outcome of the assessment.

## **Crash Replacement Program**

If a product is damaged in a non-warranty situation (e.g. crash or impact), Roost may offer a replacement under our crash replacement program.

Under this program:

- Replacement products may be offered at a reduced cost
- Availability is determined at Roost’s discretion
- Proof of purchase is required

All shipping, taxes, and associated costs are the responsibility of the customer.

Roost may require return or destruction of the original product.

## **Installation & Use**

We recommend that all components are installed by a qualified bicycle mechanic in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

Using the product outside of its intended use conditions may affect performance and durability, and is not covered under warranty and may void any claim against Roost Bike to the extent permitted by law.

## **Warranty Limitations**

To the extent permitted by law:

- Roost Bike is not responsible for indirect or consequential losses
- Warranty coverage is limited to the remedies outlined above

Nothing in this warranty excludes or limits rights under applicable consumer law.

## **Severability**

If any provision of this warranty is found to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable by a court of competent jurisdiction, that provision shall be severed from this warranty and the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.

## Orders and Shipping

     How long does it take for me to receive my order? 

Our average order delivery is 10 business days currently. When you order you will receive an email with delivery tracking.

     How do I create an account? 

When you make a purchase you have the option of checking out as a guest or creating an account.

     How do I change my shipping address? 

Just send us an email at  along with your order number and details and your new delivery address.

     How do I track the status of my order?

     Will you keep my credit card information on file? 

No we do not keep credit card details as per requirements from our payment partners Stripe and PayPal.

     Do you charge sales tax? 

We only cover GST taxes for sales to customers in Australia. Any local taxes or import duties are not covered by us.

     Do you ship to my country? 

Yes we ship to most countries. If there is a specific location you want to know about just contact us at 

     Will my items come in one package? 

Any items shipped together will come in one package. If any items are out of stock or coming from a different warehouse it will come in a separate package and shipment.

## **Who are we?**

We are a small boutique Australian resisted company run by riders for riders. When dealing with Roost Bike you deal directly with the designers, test rider and owners of the company. We are not a large sausage factory that oozes out 1,000’s of bikes. We use 5 different factory’s for our products that are manufactured to the highest production standards.

## **Our beliefs.**

At Roost Bike we encourage our clients to help us develop our products through creative sharing, testing and open ideas. We are a small boutique business keeping our cost realistic to make our products affordable yet at a high standard. We test ride all our products and push them to the limits. We partner with other suppliers to bring you other components to help you build your dream ride.

## **Where are we?**

Roost Bike HQ is in Victoria, Australia. We have two warehouses, one in Vic and one near Hangzhou China. (Near Shanghai) Our Hangzhou warehouse ships 70,000 products a week for several company’s not just Roost Bike. Due to its central location, size and shipping volume it is a much faster and cheaper way to get you our products than from Australia.

Our products are sold retail from our website and through our distributors. In some locations we have demo bikes. We ship our products to any destination around the world.

## **Testing**

Testing is one of the most important stages during production and process, our products go through FEA, fatigue and trail testing.

Our founder has over 40 years of racing and riding bikes all over the world and personally tests all Roost bike products.

All orders are processed within 1 to 5 business days (excluding weekends and holidays) after receiving your order confirmation email. You will receive another notification when your order has shipped.

While we try to minimise them as much as possible, delays can be experienced in the current climate due to issues beyond our control, such as global shortages.

Domestic Shipping Rates and Estimates

*For calculated shipping rates:* Shipping charges for your order will be calculated and displayed at checkout.

Local delivery

We currently do not offer any local delivery options.

In-store pickup

We currently do not offer in-store pickup.

International Shipping

We offer international shipping. Shipping charges for your order will be calculated and displayed at checkout.

Your order may be subject to import duties and taxes (including VAT), which are incurred once a shipment reaches your destination country. Roost Bike is not responsible for these charges if they are applied and are your responsibility as the customer.

How do I check the status of my order?

When your order has shipped, you will receive an email notification from us which will include a tracking number you can use to check its status. Please allow 48 hours for the tracking information to become available.

If you haven’t received your order within 10 days of receiving your shipping confirmation email, please contact us at admin@roostbike.com with your name and order number, and we will look into it for you.

Refunds, returns, and exchanges

Please refer to our Returns policy for more details. We accept returns up to 30 days after delivery, if the item is unused and in its original condition, and we will refund the full order amount minus the shipping costs for the return.

In the event that your order arrives damaged in any way, please email us as soon as possible at admin@roostbike.com with your order number and a photo of the item’s condition. We address these on a case-by-case basis but will try our best to work towards a satisfactory solution.

  ## **That Unique Feel of Titanium Handlebars**

Titanium is a wonderful material for a handlebar. With its unparalleled ride quality and that unmistakable brushed raw Titanium look, the Roost Titanium handlebar has become famous for a good reason.

The upshot of a Titanium handlebar is that they ride more comfortably than aluminium or carbon handlebars (30% more compliant on average), especially on bigger hits, where they take the sting off. It’s a great compromise; they’re comfortable, but not so flexible that they give a vague steering feel or unpredictable handling.

  ## **Why No 35mm Clamp?**

We don’t have a 35mm clamp version. This is due to the thickness of the material piping, where the stretched clamp section can become too thin to make the 35mm clamp. It can be done, but it’s not safe enough for us and won’t pass our tests – be careful if you do find one! It also makes the handlebars much stiffer, and you lose some of the compliance.

  ## **Which Rise and Backsweep is Best for Me?**

Rise and backsweep are very personal choices – but if you’re reading this, then you probably have not used many different types and/or don’t have a personal preference. So here is some general guidance for any handlebar:

**Rise:** Generally, a higher rise (30mm) gives you a more relaxed riding position. This is preferred by long-distance bike-packing riders as well as those who need some extra room to move around the bike on descents. A lower rise (flat bar) is generally more helpful for climbing, so it is popular with XC riders and those who like a more aggressive over-the-bar position.

**Backsweep:** Until now, all of our bars have had a 9-degree backsweep (5 degrees on the flat bar). This is the most common back sweep, and if you are riding with the bars that came with your bike, it is most likely 9 degrees. A bigger backsweep gives you a more natural hand position and can help reduce hand and wrist fatigue. This is a perfect option for long endurance rides, bikepacking adventures or for riders with existing wrist injuries or who just prefer a more relaxed position. For technical riding, the 9-degree standard gives more direct control.

  ## **What is the Intended Use?**

These handlebars are designed for mountain biking, including trekking, bikepacking, cross-country, trail riding, all-mountain and enduro. These handlebars are not designed for Downhill race bikes or extreme jump conditions.

  ## **Sculpted in Titanium**

The Roost Dominator Titanium stem is an absolute masterpiece, crafted out of a chunk of billet G5 titanium, also known as 6AL-4V. G5 is well known for its high strength, low density, and corrosion-resistant properties.

G5 titanium (often found in parts for F1 racing, gas turbines, aerospace, etc.) is also used in sections of our frames for extra strength and stiffness. Many Titanium MTB stems are mostly made from G9 titanium tubes welded together, which results in a not-so-sexy-looking tuby thing that handles like a wet noodle.

We wanted to design a stem that was not only the sexiest on the market but also delivered performance, quality, and bling like all Roost Bike products. It has a straight 35mm or 42.5mm reach and is available in both 31.8mm and 35mm clamp sizes fiting a standard 1-1/8″ steerer tube.

The all new 2022 Nero is now designed as a 29er platform which can be set up as a 27.5 as well as a mullet config (29″ front and 27.5″ rear). We have added the Geo chart so you can see what happens to the geo if you build your bike as a 27.5.

This new design is killer and our 2022 test bikes were built as 27.5, 29er and mullet all on the same frame. We never thought we could build a better bike than the 2021 Nero but we have and our customers are loving it.

### The Titanium Unicorn

The Roost Dominator Ti is the ultimate bike porn, trail smasher, roost machine and big travel Enduro rig. Undoubtably the rowdiest bike in our line-up, the Dominator Ti is a total trail slayer and a true work of art.

We are now at the Version 3 Dominator. After much testing and quite a few build changes, and still with a 63.8 degree head angle (sagged) and 76 degree seat tube angle, the Dominator puts you in the perfect position for a bit of pedaling and then dropping into long rugged fast descents.

The Dominator is designed as an Enduro bike that is well balanced and will take up all the knocks but is still effective on the pedal sections. Taking some DNA from DH bike geo we made it a little slacker and the wheelbase a tad longer than normal. This keeps the wheels grounded when needed and stable at high speed over the janky stuff.

  ### Ti Strength and Compliance

We wanted something you can smash on the toughest trails so we have really beefed it up;

- The rear swing arm is 25mm diameter G9 titanium and almost double the thickness and diameter as other Titanium bikes.
- The CNC gussets are G5 titanium, the work house of all titaniums.
- The lower tube is 51mm diameter compared to 44mm on other frames.

**No need to wrap this baby:** Never worry about shuttle scratches and damaged to your frame again with the brushed finish of the Titanium Dominator. A quick rub with a scotch bright pad removes scratches and brings the frame up like new again.

  ### Floating Pivot Design

The Dominator is designed a unique floating pivot point for the rear suspension. This results in a much more effective system for eating those big bumps and hits and keeping your momentum preserved. The rear wheel is more active through rock gardens and rooty sections resulting in less hangups. In a nutshell: it means more speed through the rough stuff.

The frame is made for an air shock keeping it simple to tune. A coil can be used with a progressive spring. The compatible shock is 230/60.

  ### Build Features

All the cables are protected by neat and tidy internal cable routing within the frame and swingarm. Internal routing with some clever options make this a pleasure to build up with your preferred components.

The Dominator Ti is available in 29″ boost wheel size but a 27.5″ or Mullet setup can be fitted with a slight change in Geo.

All frames come with a headset and take a 73mm BSA bottom bracket.
